Having a Dream and a Chance all at Once
By: Margaret Johnson
ACCE is school that has a desire to help kids stay on a track that will lead up on the road to success. Although it has been a struggle for us as the first graduating class, we are proud to have made it this far. ACCE is not like other schools; this school helps us as young people get ready for the real world. In our daily school schedule, only some things are similar since seniors only have two classes that we have to take from 9am to 12:00pm. For the rest of the day we either get to do work study, which allows students to go out and work and get paid for what they do. Or they can do an internship that allows students to have hands-on experiences doing different jobs of any kind. For instance, some students even worked at Sinai in the nursery with the newborn babies. Others worked as a secretary or at a daycare center. As for me, I really enjoy working with children and this internship program has helped me realize that Childcare is the road that I want to take. With this internship program I was able to work at Martin Luther King Jr. Day Care Center for two years. During my 11th grade year I was not really sure of what I wanted to do but I knew that dealing with children was my main interest. I wanted to work with them no matter what disabilities they may have or even if they did not have any at all. So, once I found out about the internship and that I could have a chance to work hands on with children, I wanted that internship really badly. I went to the internship coordinator, Mr. Dolly, and I explained to him what my desires were and that I really wanted to work with children and he found just the place for me at the MLK daycare center. It was perfect!! Every junior student attended their internship every Wednesday. I got to spend the day doing one-on-one activates with the babies and the other children. Since I enjoyed it in the 11th grade, I decided to go back for my senior year. I have come to understand that their goal is to help and prepare each and every child for early childhood and beyond. The daycare ages start at two years of age for now because they are waiting for a larger building. There are many different job titles and responsibilities at the daycare. Miss Allen and Miss Leslie work with the two-year-olds and they work with the after-care. Ms. Tamara and Ms. Wanda also work with the two-year-olds. Ms Allen and Ms. Michelle are social workers. Ms. Shawn is the health coordinator and what she does is she makes sure that all the food that the kids eat is the right temperature for the kids. Also, when a child is sick, she tries to get to the root of the problem. While I attended my internship I really enjoyed myself at my internship. I did not find it difficult as far as working with the children, but when I was working with the social worker it was somewhat hard, but still a great experience. Since it is my last year of high school and by having this internship, it has helped me set higher goals for myself. It has also taught me that as I get older, I will never stop learning. Finally, I have learned that two-year-olds can teach you something too even though they are very young.

My Days at ACCE High School Hi, my name is Amber Johnson. I started at ACCE in August 2004. But our principal was Mr. Maher. My 9th grade year was ok. I didn’t know anyone but, I made friends the first day I was here. The first person I met was Margaret Johnson, she was in my orientation class and she has been there for me even until now. My 10th grade year was nice. We had 7 classes, though some of them were hard for me. The hard ones were Geometry and Government but, the rest were easy. By the way, our school was on Northern Parkway when it first started. My 11th grade year was good. I like all my classes especially Biology; in that class we dissected frogs, brains, fish and more. I had so much fun in that class. The grade I am in now is 12th grade. We are allowed to do more things including going out places and getting something to eat. They help us get jobs and we get out at 12:00 pm since we only have two classes.
