Young Audiences of Maryland/ Arts for Learning

Once again, ACCE has teamed up with Young Audiences of Maryland/Arts for Learning to provide the Career in the Arts (C.I.A.) Program.  The C.I.A. program exposes ninth grade students to various forms of art as a possible career choice.  This extended day, eighth period class satisfies the Maryland fine arts requirement needed to graduate from high school. All classes are taught by teaching artists working professionally in their respective fields. Each freshperson will take one semester of a visual arts class, and one of a performing arts class.

The 2007-2008 school year offers a choice between dance taught by Kwame Opare, founder of Dishibem Dance Company;

Drumming taught by Salim Ajanku, artistic director of Sankofa Dance Company;

Ceramics taught by Amanda Pellerin of Baltimore Clayworks;

or Mixed Media, taught by Herb Massie, also of Baltimore Clayworks.

         This fall students have infused traditional step dance with West African rhythms, learned the three basic drumming techniques and the Cou-Cou rhythm of West Africa, produced several ceramics projects, as well as constructed tiles for a mapping project of the student’s neighborhoods in ceramics.  They have also learned mask making, sketching, and still life techniques in the visual arts class. Our first field trip to the Walters Art Museum in October introduced students to Renaissance, Egyptian, and Medieval collections, as well as provided a hands-on studio experience for students (and some faculty!).

         In the winter we hope to take students on a trip to the Smithsonian museums in D.C, as well as continue the tradition started last year, performing for the community and local nursing home residents.  Be on the lookout for our upcoming bi-annual showcase in December, so that you can get an up-close and personal look at ACCE’s present and future artistic geniuses!
